Harry Potter reading order
Updated 1 October 2026
The seven Harry Potter novels in order, with UK dates and the US title of the first book kept distinct.
There are seven Harry Potter novels by J. K. Rowling. Read them in publication order. The story is consecutive, and later books assume you know the earlier ones. The UK publisher is Bloomsbury. The US publisher is Scholastic. The first book's UK title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The US title is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. They are the same novel. Rowling has said she regrets the US title change. That is a paraphrase of the public record, not a quotation.
The seven novels
Dates are the UK publication dates given by Wikipedia, except where a date is shared as the worldwide publication day. The first card's cover is the US Scholastic edition, ISBN 9780590353427, confirmed on Open Library under the US title. Buy on that card follows that ISBN. The other six cards search by the UK title and the author, without an invented barcode.
What is not one of the seven
A later stage play and a set of film-series companion books sit outside these seven novels. They are not required, and they are not hidden prequels you should read between book three and book four. If you want the story of Harry's years at school, the list above is the whole of it. Illustrated editions and house-crest paperbacks are the same seven books with new ISBNs. Check your shelf before you buy a second Philosopher's Stone because the jacket is prettier.
The Order of the Phoenix is the longest of the seven. That is a useful expectation, not a warning to skip it. Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows resolve plots that the middle books spend a long time building. Reading them out of order will spoil those plots. There is no alternate order that improves the series.
For a household, record which copies you own and who is reading which one. A family can easily buy two copies of book one and none of book five. The US and UK titles of the first book are the usual reason: one person searches for Philosopher and another already shelved Sorcerer. Treat those titles as one work when you check for duplicates.
Illustrated editions, house editions, and adult-cover reprints are still these seven novels. A new jacket does not make a new story, and it does create a new ISBN. If a child is halfway through Chamber of Secrets in paperback, buying the illustrated hardcover is a second copy, not a replacement, unless you give the paperback away and update the record. Read them in the numbered order on this page even when the set is pretty enough to display out of order on a shelf.
