Your shelf stays on this device
Updated 1 October 2026
Book Ledger does not require an account. The books you add, including notes, ratings, locations, and who you lent a copy to, are stored in IndexedDB in this browser. Clearing site data or deleting the installed app deletes that library unless you have a backup file.
What leaves the phone
Looking up an ISBN calls Book Ledger's server, which asks Open Library and, if needed, Google Books. That request is the ISBN, not your whole shelf. Covers are loaded from Open Library's cover service.
Ask Book Ledger answers questions about your own shelf on the device. Counts never go to a model. A question that needs fresh public information can be sent to the Vercel AI Gateway. That request is the question, not a dump of your library. Dropbox backup appears only if you connect a Dropbox app, and then only the backup file you choose to upload is sent.
No tracking
There is no third-party analytics script and no advertising pixel. If a sponsored row is shown on a lookup, impression and click counts stay in local storage on that phone. They are not tied to a personal tracking id, and prices are not tracked.
One cookie, book-ledger-shelf, remembers whether this browser has any saved books, so the home page can open the app instead of the public introduction. It does not contain a title, an ISBN, or an identifier for you. The service worker caches pages of this site so they can load again. It does not cache API responses.
Affiliate links
Guide pages and some lookup rows link to Amazon. When the site is built with an Amazon Associates tag, the link includes that tag and Book Ledger may earn a commission from a qualifying purchase. Amazon can see that the click came from this site. The link does not include your library or a per-user tracking id.
When no tag is configured, Buy opens a plain Amazon search with no tag, and the card says so. A commission applies only when the tag is on the link. Book Ledger does not take payment itself.
